Unemployed youth who are passionate about becoming professional fire fighters can consider joining Cape Town’s Firefighter Learnership program. The city of Cape Town is offering the opportunity for the youth and the qualified candidates to take part in this full-time program. Once they have completed the program, the candidates are expected to experience a significant improvement in their skills and qualifications – which can have a positive impact in their career.
About the Program
Candidates who want to learn about the details of becoming a professional fire fighter can take advantage from this Cape Town’s Firefighter Learnership program because they will get both the theoretical platform as well as the direct practice. And as if it weren’t enough, they will also get salary during their learnership program which may reach R163 948 per year.
The Requirements
- They must be the citizens of South Africa
- They must not have any criminal record
- They must have completed Grade 12 or Matric, especially in Physical Science and Mathematics
- They must be able to show Matric certificate as the proof
- They must be physically and medically fit
- They must not have any fear of heights or confined spaces
- They must be able to work under stressful situation and to work well in a team
- They must be able to complete Hazmat Awareness, Firefighter 1 and 2, First Aid Level 3, and Hazmat Operations courses
- The successful candidates are expected to start the training session on June the 1st
Candidates also need to understand that they must pass the standard Fire and Rescue physical assessment that may include:
- Practical assessment. Candidates must undergo Reach Test (1.9 meters), Dead load carry, sit-ups, and 2.4 kilometers run. Further assessment would depend on the gender
- Claustrophobia and Acrophobia tests
- Written assessment that covers comprehension and Mathematics, medical evaluation, substance abuse test, and interview
How to Apply
The application will take place directly, in person. Candidates must bring these documents:
- An original ID document
- A certified copy of ID document that isn’t older than 6 months
- The original Matric (Grade 12) certificate
- A recent certified copy of Matric certificate that isn’t older than 6 months
- PT clothes as well as running shoes
- Original and also certified copy of results statements (only accepted for the 2019 Matriculants)
- Their own refreshment – all candidates are responsible for their own
- They must also be ready for all kinds of weather conditions
Candidates must come to 53 Berkley Road, Ndabeni (the old abattoir premises) in Cape Town. They must come before 8.30 AM. Any late arrival won’t be allowed.
The screening process would be based on each of the candidate’s first surname letter.
- If the surname starts in A – E, they should come on February the 10th 2020 before 8.30 AM.
- If the surname starts in F – J, they should come on February the 11th 2020 before 8.30 AM.
- If the surname starts in K – M, they should come on February the 12th 2020 before 8.30 AM.
- If the surname starts in N – Q, they should come on February the 13th 2020 before 8.30 AM.
- If the surname starts in R – Z, they should come on February the 14th 2020 before 8.30 AM.
Candidates must make sure that they come as the schedules or they may not have the chance for this Cape Town’s Firefighter Learnership program.
