Job Overview
The job requires your application to include reference number H/A/4. This role offers a competitive annual salary of R 365 646 (OSD). To qualify, you must hold a trade test certificate. Options include: a completed apprenticeship with proof of passing Section 13(2)(h) of the 1981 Manpower Training Act, a certificate under Sections 28 and 30 of the same Act, or a certificate from the repealed Section 27.
Ten years of post-qualification experience as an Artisan or Foreman, plus 3–5 years of supervisory work, is mandatory. Candidates must also have a valid driver’s license and an N3 certificate. The Chief Artisan role at Phekolong Hospital has these same requirements. The position does not demand specialized knowledge or skills.
Key Performance Areas:
The individual will manage all aspects of technical design, technical services, operation, production, and maintenance activities across field locations, technical offices, and workshops to ensure effective maintenance programs are in effect. This role includes responsibility for rendering emergency power installations and overseeing electrical distribution systems. Additionally, the incumbent will be accountable for steam regulation systems, ensuring these critical infrastructure components operate efficiently and reliably to support the institution’s operational needs.
Specialized engineering services fall under this position’s purview, including clinical engineering services, machine room maintenance, gardening, oxygen support, and gas supply programs. The role requires timely ordering of cylinders and bulk oxygen to maintain adequate supplies. Furthermore, responsibilities encompass woodwork, plumbing, AC, electrical, building, autoclave, boiler, and mechanical maintenance, as well as console operations, cooling ventilation, type air conditioning units, and various industrial systems maintenance.
Beyond technical oversight, this position involves managing contracts and projects while representing the institution at all engineering-related conferences and meetings. The incumbent must ensure the division operates in strict accordance with prescribed regulations and policies. Additional responsibilities include supervising resources, managing administrative functions, overseeing financial operations, and leading personnel. The role also requires continuous advancement and maintenance of professional expertise to ensure the division remains at the forefront of engineering practices and standards.
