Details
A group of music teachers in Cape Town established South African Society of Music Teachers in 1918. It is now the oldest South African professional music society. The organisation represents music teachers in private practices, schools, music centers, universities and colleges. This year, individuals with a passion for music can apply for the South African Society of Music Teachers Bursary program 2018-19. There are four categories of bursaries awarded:
- Kathleen Irish scholarship: value amounting to R 12,000 that will be paid in 2 instalments to the qualified candidates/institution. It’s reserved for talented music students who wish to pursue piano study at tertiary level and come from disadvantaged background
- David Reunert bursary: value amounting to R 1,500 that will be given to music students who plan on performing or teaching music professionally
- Gladwell scholarship: value amounting to R 12,000 that will be paid in 2 instalments to the qualified students or institution. It’s reserved for music students who wish to study music namely composition, instrumental or vocal
- Ellie Marx Memorial scholarship: value amounting to R 5,000 that is reserved for students studying stringed instruments, particularly the violin.
The qualified applicants will be required to perform at the upcoming South African Society of Music Teachers Annual General Meeting.

Application procedure
Applications for the South African Society of Music Teachers Bursary program 2018-19 are accepted until October 12, 2018. Students who are interested in this bursary call can commence their applications by downloading and completing the application form. This form can be used to apply for all the four categories.
In addition, you need to submit the following supporting documents as well:
- Certified copy of ID document
- Matric certificate/equivalent
- Full academic record to date
- A brief CV
- At least 2 referee recommendations, one of which must come from the head from the institution/department head of your current institution where you are studying
- Electronic photo (must be about 500 px height)
- A youtube video or recent unedited DVD recording. It must contain a minimum of 3 contrasting works from at least 2 style periods. The total duration must be between 15 to 20 minutes. Every work must be on a separate track. Note that, your name and the name and instrument must be mentioned on the DVD and not recorded.
- Teachers declaration stating that the DVD is your personal performance
