Job Description

Hey, there’s a spot open in the Works Construction and Maintenance team—no fluff here. If you’re in the right ballpark, you could be based in Thabo Mofutsanyane (PWI 19/15), Motheo/Xhariep (PWI 19/16), or Fezile Dabi/Lejweleputswa (PWI 19/17). Pay? R179,523 a year (OSD). Solid, but not pocket-change territory.

Now, to apply, you’ll need an Apprenticeship cert and a passed Trade Test. That’s the legal stuff under Section 13(2)(h) of the 1981 Manpower Training Act. Or, if you’ve got that old Section 27 certificate from the repealed version, that works too. Either way, you’ll have to prove you know your way around the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993. No ifs, ands, or butts.

So what does the job actually look like? Think of it as a mix of hands-on work and strategic planning. You’ll build new infrastructure, fix old stuff daily, and jump on emergencies when they pop up. Safety’s non-negotiable—follow the OHS Act like it’s your second language. Then there’s the routine: maintaining machinery, keeping tools sharp, compiling material lists. In workshops, you’ll fabricate, repair, and make sure everything’s in tip-top shape.

But here’s the catch: it’s not just physical labor. You’ll plan, organize, write reports, manage tools, and supervise subordinates. It’s a leadership role wrapped in grease and sweat. New installations? Minor fixes? You’ll handle it all. And yes, you’ll assess tools, equipment, and people—because this isn’t a solo act.

Bottom line? If you like variety, problem-solving, and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, this could be your gig. Just don’t expect a 9-to-5. The days are long, the challenges real, but if you’re up for it… who knows? You might just find your fit.
