The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is a leading public university in South Africa that provides high-quality education and research opportunities to students from all over the world. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in various fields, including business, engineering, health sciences, humanities, law, science, and technology.
If you are a student planning to apply for admission to UJ in 2024, this guide provides you with a comprehensive overview of the application process and admission requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Application Process
UJ accepts online applications for admission to all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The application process is simple and convenient, and you can complete your application from anywhere in the world. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to apply to UJ:
Step 1: Check the Admission Requirements
Before you start your application, it is important to ensure that you meet the admission requirements for the programme you wish to apply for. The admission requirements for each programme may vary depending on the faculty and level of study. You can find the admission requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes on the UJ website.
Step 2: Create a UJ Student Portal Account
To apply online, you must first create a UJ student portal account. This account will allow you to start and complete your application, upload supporting documents, track your application status, and receive important communication from the university.
To create a UJ student portal account, go to the UJ website and click on “Apply” on the top menu. Then, click on “Create New Account” and follow the instructions to create your account.
Step 3: Complete the Online Application Form
Once you have created your UJ student portal account, you can start your online application. Log in to your account and click on “Start New Application”. Follow the instructions to complete the application form, including providing your personal details, academic qualifications, and programme of study.
Step 4: Pay the Application Fee
All undergraduate and postgraduate applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of R200.00. You can pay the application fee online using a credit card or by depositing the fee into the UJ bank account. Note that the application fee must be paid before your application can be processed.
Step 5: Upload Supporting Documents
As an international applicant, you will be required to upload the following supporting documents with your application:
- Final school leaving results if you are applying with international credentials or currently in Grade 12 (final Grade 11 results)
- Valid passport, identity document, or birth certificate
- Sworn English translation of documents (documents issued in any language other than English)
- Proof of English proficiency where English was not used as a medium of learning and teaching. UJ prefers the IELTS at an overall score of 6 and TOEFL at an average score of 80-104 for undergraduate programmes. Alternatively, you can write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP) and obtain an overall score of 6. Contact Mr Malibongwe Masango for UJELP at +27 (0) 11 559 4265 or ujelp1@uj.ac.za.
- An academic transcript that covers the period of study if you have attended a university within or outside the Republic of South Africa.
You can upload the supporting documents on the application platform or email them to intappsdocs@listsrv.uj.ac.za.
Step 6: Submit Your Application
Once you have completed the application form and uploaded all the required documents, you can submit your application. Note that you will not be able to make any changes to your application once it has been submitted, so be sure to review all the information carefully before submitting.
After you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email. This email will contain important information, such as your application number and the date and time of submission. You should keep this email in a safe place, as you may need to refer to it later.
Step 7: Wait for the Decision
After you have submitted your application, the next step is to wait for the decision. This can take several weeks or even months, depending on the program and the university. In the meantime, it is important to keep track of any deadlines or additional requirements that the university may request.
If you are accepted, you will receive an acceptance letter or email, which will contain information on how to accept the offer and enroll in the program. If you are not accepted, you may still have other options, such as appealing the decision or applying to other programs or universities.
