How Do I Become a Traffic Officer?

There are multiple opportunities for young and talented individuals to become traffic officers. This traffic officer learnership is made possible by Western Cape Government.

To become a traffic officer, applicants must first complete a Traffic Officer Learnership Programme. This is a 12-month training programme that will prepare you for a career as a traffic officer. This learnership will commence on February 1, at the Gene Louw College (GLTC), Brackenfell. You will learn how to enforce road traffic laws and regulations, as well as ensure compliance with these rules by drivers.

Traffic Officer Learnership Programme

The Traffic Officer Learnership Programme is divided into two phases – pre-service and service. During the pre-service phase, you will attend lectures and practical sessions. In addition, you will undergo an assessment process to determine whether you meet the requirements for admission into the Traffic Officer Learnership Programme. If you do not pass the assessment, you will need to re-apply after completing additional training.

Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement provides a 24/7 traffic law enforcement service, therefore after appointment candidates will be expected to work shifts including public holidays and Sundays, and be willing to work additional hours, if required. Successful candidates must obtain their own accommodation while attending GLTC, Brackenfell.

Students will be subject to the code of conduct of the college as well as the competency requirements of the college. Also, students will be required to undergo extensive physical training at the college.

Below the various Traffic Centres, you may select only one Centre of preference closest to your residential area in the application questions.

  • Vredendal, Vredenburg, Caledon;
  • Brackenfell and Somerset West;
  • Swellendam, Mossel Bay, George, and Knysna; and
  • Worcester, Laingsburg, Beaufort West, and Oudtshoorn.

Traffic Officer Learnership Requirements

These Traffic Officer Learnership demand all the participants to at least fulfill the following minimum requirements upon applying.

  • A Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification;
  • Applicant must be physically fit, pregnant persons will not be considered as physical tasks during the recruitment and subsequent training may pose a threat to the unborn child and/or the mother;
  • Applicants must be residents near their selected traffic centers if appointed afterward;
  • Candidates must qualify for appointment as an Authorized Officer and for the appointment as Peace Officer in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977;
  • Candidates reserved for shortlisting will be subject to undergo fingerprint checks by the SAPS and will be required to undergo the following tests: interview, knowledge test, fitness, driving test, and a medical test as proof that the reserved candidates may do strenuous exercise;
  • No criminal record;
  • Valid motor vehicle license (manual) code B;
  • Visible tattoos and body piercings (except for females with one piercing in each ear) will disqualify an applicant as this will not complement uniformity in a uniform-wearing environment; and
  • Well-versed with the home language of the majority of residents in a specific area where successful incumbents will be appointed.

Besides complying with these basic requirements, applicants with one year or more of driving experience will be an advantage. Candidates younger than 35 years of age will receive preference as these positions are targeted at the youth of the province.

Traffic Officer Learnership 2023 Closing Date
