General Requirements

To be eligible for the Staff Officer (Captain) position, candidates must meet the following general requirements:

  1. Competency in the post-specific core functions of the post and proven experience.
  2. Be in possession of a Senior Certificate (Grade 12).
  3. Be proficient in at least two official languages, with English being one of them.

Core Functions

The Staff Officer (Captain) will be responsible for the following core functions:

  1. Provide management control on administrative functions and services in the office of the Component Head to ensure the maintenance of good organizational systems on document management and alignment with the Registry and Archive system.
  2. Organize and apply secretarial and other services and functions, ensuring professional attendance to commitments.
  3. Manage stakeholder consultations and record decisions to ensure proper information management.
  4. Maintain proper record-keeping of decisions and provide general briefing information on decisions taken.
  5. Undertake quality control of reporting, document control, and information management, while managing personnel performance.
  6. Ensure performance management and agreement reporting, compliance with MISS, and document control.
  7. Handle grievances and conflicts.
  8. Manage and control human and physical resources of the office, implementing financial control measures, safekeeping face value statements, submitting expenditure claims on time, and making travel and accommodation arrangements.

  10. Candidates appointed under the Police Service Act may be subjected to a lateral entry training program at a SAPS training institution if deemed necessary.

  13. Short-listed candidates will be expected to undergo a personal interview as well as a practical assessment.
  14. Candidates short-listed for certain identified posts will undergo vetting in terms of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 2007 (Act No 32 of 2007) and the Children’s Act, 2005 (Act No 38 of 2005). Individuals whose particulars appear in either the National Register for S*x Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register will be disqualified from the selection process.
  15. According to the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act, Act 37 of 2013, all new appointments in the South African Police Service since 31 January 2015 are required to provide a buccal sample (inside cheek) for a forensic DNA profile. This profile will be loaded into the Elimination Index of the National Forensic DNA Database.
  16. Short-listed candidates will undergo fingerprint screening and reference checks as part of the selection process.
  17. Correspondence regarding the application will be conducted only with successful candidates. If an applicant has not been contacted within 3 months after the closing date of the advertisement, it should be assumed that the application was unsuccessful.
  18. The South African Police Service is under no obligation to fill a post after advertising it.
