About DCS Learnership
DCS seeks qualified youth from diverse communities for the FET Certificate in Correction Services Learnership (NQF Level 4). The program trains learners in rehabilitation and human development for secure, safe, and humane detention or community supervision, with English as the medium of instruction. Note that completing the learnership does not guarantee permanent employment with DCS.
DCS Learnership Requirements
Basic Enlistment Requirements:
- South African citizenship
- Possession of Grade 12 or National Senior Certificate
- Completion of National Certificate in Vocational Studies (NQF Level 4)
- Completion of a further Education and Training Certificate (NQF Level 4)
Encouraged Qualifications:
- Corrections/Penology/Criminology
- Agriculture (including Agriculture Economists, Agriculture Engineering, Agriculture Management, Animal Health Technicians, Animal Production, and Plant Production)
- Artisans (all fields, especially Baker/Pastry Maker, Boiler Maker, Bricklayer, Cabinet maker, Construction Carpenter, Electrician, Fitter and Turner, Furniture Machinist/Polisher, Gunsmith, Locksmith, Millwright, Painter, Patternmaker, Plumber, Sheet Metal, Spray Painting, Tool and Die Maker, Upholstery, Welder, Wood Machinist)
- Construction Health and Safety Technicians
- Food Processing (General Abattoir Processes, Meat Inspector / Examination, Processed and Preserved Meat, Fish, Fruit, and Vegetables)
- Graphic Designers
- Two-way Radio Communication Technicians
- Textile Designing (Garment Makers/Tailors/Seamsters, Footwear Design, and Shoe Making)
Additional Requirements:
- Age between 21 and 35 years old
- Strong character
- Physically fit and mentally resilient
- Willing to disclose information for application processing
- Personnel suitability checks (background, citizenship, qualifications, criminal record)
- Law-abiding and without a criminal record
- Willing to undergo selection processes by DCS
FET Certificate in Corrections Services Learnership NQF 4:
- Outcome-based and addresses skills shortage in DCS and South Africa
- A legally binding agreement between the employer, learner, and service provider
- A one-year program consisting of:
- 30% theoretical/instructional learning
- 70% workplace learning
- Theoretical learning includes firearm and physical/self-defense training at designated DCS colleges
- Free accommodation, meals, training materials, and uniforms provided during the theoretical training
- The learner must be accommodated full-time at the training college during the theoretical training
- Workplace learning at Correctional Centres and Social Reintegration/Community Correction Offices
- Learners responsible for their own accommodation, meals, and transport during workplace learning
- Stipend provided during workplace learning
- No pension fund, housing allowance, housing subsidy, danger allowance, medical aid, or overtime provided
- Competency achieved after successful completion of theoretical and workplace learning, final submission of Portfolio of Evidence, and external verification by SASSETA
- Contraventions or deviations during the 12-month period will be dealt with by DCS in accordance with the Skills Development Act, 97 of 1998
- Successful completion results in FET Certificate in Correctional Services (NQF Level 4)
DCS Learnership Stipend
The Department of Correctional Services Learnership offers a stipend of R3738.25 per month.
