City of Cape Town Fire Fighter Learnership Requirements
To apply for the City of Cape Town Fire Fighter Learnership, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a Grade 12 certificate, with preference given to those who have studied Mathematics and Physical Science;
- Be 18 years or older;
- Not have a fear of confined spaces or heights;
- Be in good physical and medical condition;
- Possess the ability to work in a team and handle stress;
- Have a clear criminal record; and
- Successfully complete the Firefighter 1 (NFPA 1001), Hazmat Awareness (NFPA 1072), Hazmat Operations (NFPA 1072), and First Aid Level 3 courses presented by the learning institution.
City of Cape Town Fire Fighter Learnership Application
Applications for the City of Cape Town Fire Fighter Learnership must be submitted online through eRecruitment. No hard copy or email applications will be accepted.
To apply online, candidates must first create an e-Services Account on the City of Cape Town website at www.capetown.gov.za. Any computer with internet access can be used, but smartphones are not compatible with the online application process. Library members of the City of Cape Town can use a Smart Cape computer at a City library. To become a library member, you must apply with your ID and proof of residency at a library location.
Certified copies of qualifications must be provided upon request. If no notification of appointment is received within three months of the closing date, the applicant should assume their application was unsuccessful. Late applications will not be considered.
The following must be submitted with the online application:
- Certified copy of South African ID (no affidavits will be accepted); and
- Recently certified copy of matric certificate.
Shortlisted candidates will be notified via SMS or by phone to attend a compulsory test. Candidates are advised to bring their own gear, food, and refreshments to the testing venue. The selection process is done through elimination. Only those with no criminal record and no pending criminal cases will be considered for employment. Only candidates who pass a compulsory drug test will be eligible for employment.
Fire Fighter Learnership Shortlisted Candidates
All candidates selected for consideration will be required to pass the following mandatory fitness test:
- Reach test (1.9 m);
- 2.4 km run (11 minutes for males, 13 minutes for females);
- 30 push-ups in 60 seconds;
- 30 sit-ups in 60 seconds; and
- Dead load carries (2 x 25 kg drums over a distance of 100 m).
Note: Candidates who pass the physical test must also:
- Pass a written assessment and interview;
- Submit their fingerprints or ID numbers for a criminal record check (no other clearances will be accepted);
- Undergo a City medical evaluation;
- Take a compulsory drug test at a City testing center; and
- Pass claustrophobia and acrophobia tests (fear of confined spaces and heights).
Please note:
- This is a non-permanent contract position for the duration of the training;
- Permanent appointment as a Learner Fire Fighter is contingent upon the successful completion of the prescribed training program; and
- A uniform and protective clothing must be worn.
Fire Fighter Learnership Stipend
Successful candidates for the City of Cape Town Fire Fighter Learnership will receive a stipend of R189,127 per year or R15,760 per month.
