A Tyre Serviceman, also known as a Tire Technician or Tyre Fitter, is a skilled professional responsible for maintaining, repairing, and fitting tires on various types of vehicles. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety, performance, and longevity of tires, which are essential components of any vehicle. Here is an overview of the responsibilities, skills, and qualifications typically associated with the Tyre Serviceman profession:

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Compliance: Tyre Servicemen are required to adhere to client policies, procedures, and instructions. This includes following safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a secure working environment.
  2. Record Keeping: Accurately recording tire change information and filing or forwarding it as required. This documentation is vital for tracking maintenance history and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  3. Equipment Checks: Performing regular checks and calibrations on tire service equipment according to established procedures. This ensures that tools and machinery are in optimal condition for safe and efficient operation.
  4. Tire Fitting and Removal: Fitting and removing wheels from various types of vehicles according to established procedures. This involves expertise in handling different wheel and tire assemblies.
  5. Repairs: Performing repairs on tires and tubes, following specified procedures. This includes identifying and rectifying faults in motor vehicle tires and wheels.
  6. Operation of Machinery: Operating forklifts and tire handlers according to safety and operational procedures. This requires skill in handling specialized equipment.
  7. Maintenance: Cleaning, painting, and crack testing rim components to ensure their durability and safety. Regular inspections and assessments of wheel components’ suitability for continued service are also part of the maintenance duties.
  8. Pressure Maintenance: Maintaining tire operating pressures in accordance with site specifications. This contributes to optimal vehicle performance and safety.
  9. Customer Service: Providing a high quality of service to clients, often involving effective communication and a customer-focused approach.
  10. Safety Practices: Adhering to safety practices, including “lock out” / “tag out” procedures, reporting hazards and unsafe conditions, and using and maintaining personal protective equipment (PPE).

Indication of Achievement:

Tyre Servicemen are expected to demonstrate awareness of customer care, knowledge of PPE usage and care, and the achievement of specific unit standards and electives related to the profession. This may include qualifications such as the ability to select and use automobile lifting equipment, knowledge of faults in motor vehicle tires and wheels, and skills in repairing and fitting tires to wheels.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A valid and appropriate light vehicle driver’s license (South African Code 08).
  • Grade 12 National Certificate.
  • A valid and appropriate heavy vehicle driver’s license (South African Code 10).

Tyre Servicemen must actively contribute to safety in the workplace by participating in meetings and inspections, performing risk assessments, and undertaking planned task observations.
