Description

The Rural Education Access Program, also shortened as REAP, was established in 2001. It is a non-profit organisation that intends to provide financial support and guidance to deserving South African citizens who come from disadvantaged rural households, to undertake their tertiary education and thereby reduce rural poverty in South Africa. Its base is located in Cape Town, with regional offices in Johannesburg and Durban where 30 staff members are employed.

This year, the organisation is inviting applications for the REAP Bursary South Africa 2019. The bursary is available for studying at one of the 6 chosen universities: University of the Free State; University of the Western Cape; University of Kwa-Zulu Natal; University of Johannesburg; Central University of Technology; Nelson Mandela University.

Qualified students must receive majority of their funding from NSFAS, while REAP will be responsible for supplementary financial support, up to R 6000 annually. Students will also be awarded a monthly stipend, along with academic monitoring; psychosocial support; mentoring and life skills training. Successful candidates will be required to conduct community service annually.

Entry criteria

Before applying, make sure you meet all of these minimum requirements:

  • Candidates must be South African citizens
  • Candidates must not be older than 24 years old
  • Candidates must be from a rural area
  • Candidates must have attended a school in a rural area
  • Candidates must have written their NSC exams at a school in a rural region in the last two years
  • Candidates must have attained at least overall average of 55% in their NSC exams, not including Life Orientation
  • Candidates must have been accepted/provisionally accepted to study at one of the aforementioned institutions
  • Candidates must have applied for NSFAS funding as well as have received confirmation
  • Candidates must have been accepted to stay in a private or residence accommodation accredited and approved by NSFAS
  • Candidates’ household/family income must not exceed R 122000 annually prior any deductions (less than R 10167 every month, including all grants and contributions

You must also submit clear copies of the following documents:

  • Certified copy of ID
  • Certified copy of matric certificate
  • Proof of acceptance to study at one of the universities mentioned above
  • Proof of household or family income, including social grants

Applications received after February 22, 2019 will not be regarded. Therefore, please apply no later than the stipulated deadline so as to make sure your application will be taken into consideration. No incomplete application will be accepted either.
